Pretty but short and kind of difficult to look around because the trail is so uneven. No view.

Great rest stop and short trail off of Saddle Road! The signage is very informative and it's a good spot to watch and listen for birds (even on a short stop!).

The lava path is not muddy and is easy to walk on. Even a senior couple could enjoy a safe and enjoyable walk while admiring the ohia lehua. On the way back, we thought it would be dangerous to walk on the side of the road, so we walked back and forth on the trail. On the way back, we were in the clouds, so the lava was wet and a little slippery, so we had to be careful, but we were able to beat the heat and return easily. I think it's a safe trail even for families. Sneakers are a must. Difficulty Moderate Route type Out-and-Back Time spent 2-3 hr Recommended activities Hiking, Walking Parking space Plenty of parking Parking options Free parking lot Parking There's plenty of space to park two or three cars. Restrooms There are no restrooms, so please use the facilities before you go.

Short easy walk in unique habitat for my idea of what Hawaii was. Stays close to the highway. Route type Point-to-Point

This is a great quick hike and is kid friendly. I took my 5 year old on this hike in the rain as her first real foray into hiking. The trail is pretty flat, and it can get slippery in the rain if you aren't used to lava rock hikes. The trail is all lava. It's marked with rock cairns and doesn't go to a specific overlook or anything - it goes about 1.6 miles to the other end of the trail, and then back again. You can park int he upper or lower parking area. A couple notes: - cell service was pretty spotty for AT&T and T-mobile (Google Fi) - No bathrooms at either end - no trash cans (but some trash, so be a sport and pack a trash bag in so you can haul other people's waste out?!) - No benches

This was a really austere and serene trail. I did it when it was rainy— have to be careful of the slippery volcanic rock. With good hiking shoes, I was able to travel downhill at a fine pace. The rocks form more so shelves rather than a continuous ramp, so one can get a good grip. The other nice thing about the volcanic rock is no mud! I was quite mud free. The nature is spectacular. I love the little yellow plants that have sprung up all over the place. It's nice to just look out into the beyond at times. At times you will find yourself in a little cove of woodlands before again emerging into the ash-piled landscape. The highway was far enough such that the noise was not a disturbance. One of the most memorable hikes I have done. I did not quite get to the end since it was getting dark; it said 1.2 miles but it felt longer, but who am I to contend with modern day cartographic equipment. Difficulty Moderate Route type Point-to-Point Time spent 1-2 hr Recommended activities Hiking Parking options Free parking lot
