A wonderful park that takes people by trees, on a bridge over FDR Drive, and to the East River, where one can catch views of Brooklyn, Queens, and the Bronx (as vehicles speed by on FDR Drive, separated from the park by a cast-iron fence). And the park’s relative isolation—in New York City!—provides its own charm.

Very nice park and larger than most in Manhattan. The dog park area is well maintained and the dogs and owners are mostly good dogs and ppl. It's a beautiful place to let your dog play as you watch the sunrise over the East river and Queensboro bridge.

Nice dog park. The park is right by the water. It over looks Roosevelt Island as well as Queens right behind. There is not any grass at this park. There is a nice overpass to get closer right in front of the water. Only downside is that, it can get a little smelly with all the dogs and poop that is some times not picked up by the dog owners.

This became my favorite calm spot. It is large enough for a decent group, calm enough to bring an infant in the stroller, or the dog to the dog park. There are two entrances through 51st and 49, one has many steps the other is stroller accessible. Also it has a path above FDR to the water with a couple of benches.

Love taking my pups over to the dog run just down the steps and past the first left exit. The dog run is very clean and kept by neighbors so please bear that in mind. The park is cobbled so the pups are also less likely to get muddy or dirty.

Great place to relax. In addition, there is a dog run, game tables, and plenty of places to sit. The park closes at dusk. You'll have to go down some stairs, but it's a great park. You can hold a fairly large outdoor gathering too.

Great park to unwind. Well kept. More of a neighborhood park. Wooded gem great for kids, adults, friends to have lunch In summer or reed a book. Easily missed or mistaken for something else. Definitely kid friendly there is an off-leash dog park, gazebo and waterfall type structure.

. A nearly perfect space and expanse for walking One's dogs. . A quiet location in the hustle and bustle of Manhattan's Berkman Place area, with the East River Drive and River itself as part of the panorama. . Hidden away, but not forgotten. . Definitely, for those of us in this great Neighborhood a go to destination . . . . .

It is a beautiful park, but very unfortunately, people who come to this park regularly are psychotic in very, very high rate. That includes people come with cute dogs. It is sad that this beautiful park has very dark irritant murky energy of exclusion, entitlement and tenseness. Actually, I was warned from several people who have dogs when I first moved near this park, the "energy of people" are really atrocious and don't worth going there. I wish I have had listened to their word of caution. You may not realize or doesn't matter when you visit here once or twice a year, but for me it became palpably apparent few month after I started to go. A lot of lonely cranky frustrated old crowd go there to do nothing during the day, but only to steam out often on younger happier people. High school kids also come here to do all sorts of bad stuff including vaping, weed, drinking and so on. Unless you are the type who like misery party and never ending negative gossips, stay away by any means!!

This has long been one of my favorite little parks in the city, a hidden gem to borrow the cliche. I discovered during my first of three jobs in the neighborhood and visits here during lunch got me through the challenges of each. My photos are of the construction of the waterfront trail and esplanade across the FDR that I'm anxiously awaiting. I suspect locals are not looking forward to it however, as it will reduce the park's isolation as a pocket park used mainly by locals. 0:31

A lovely find that makes you feel like you’ve entered a secret garden . A place where dogs run free with giant smiles on their faces . In another area you can walk out to a scenic overlook at the east river . Sadly I do need to mention if you are entering at 51st there are a load of stairs & no ramp for wheelchairs or walkers . There might be another way in but I didn’t see it . Beautiful escape though if that’s not an issue .

While visiting NYC, we stay on the east side close to Peter Detmold Park. Our small Yorkie comes with us on the trip,. The park has a dog area where dogs can run free in an enclosed area, and do their business. There are not many grassy or mulch areas on the general streets so having a place to take your dog like this is great. All of the other dog owners are respectful if you don't want your dog to engage with theirs. However the dog park ground themselves are mostly dirt and if it rains it snows, it's just a big muddy mess and not a better option than the main sidewalks. I also would be hesitant to go there at night, as it is very dark and possibly not safe for dogs or people. Outside is the dog park is the main park, which is a fenced brick walkway along the highway, with trees and benches. It's probably more appealing in the warmer times of the year when there is vegetation. Otherwise, you may opt to take the bridge that crosses the park and takes you to the walkaway along the river, which offers some nice views.

A nice place to meditate away from the hustle and bustle of this concrete jungle we call New York City, listen to the harmony of the lapping waves of the East River and the mechanic waves of car noises from the FDR, and from afar, watch the losers on Roosevelt Island walk around lmao Dog-friendliness Heck yea there's a dog park and they're always gooning around

Smells like wet dog often since there's a dog park right there. And people often come here to smoke cigarettes when it's nice out. Other than that it's beautiful.

There is a wonderful dog park there, right under the walkway. There are some steep steps to the walkway and further down to get to the dog park and the park itself. It is off of 51st and 1st Ave. One would miss it if you only look with your eyes and not walk to the almost hidden entrance to the steps. There is however another entrance way down towards expressway on 49th st. No stairs. Very peaceful.
